When Christene Barberich told me last year that Refinery29 was making a book, I thought to myself: makes sense, and about time. I was imagining a mind boggling ‘making of’ opus, or ‘the cat’s pajamas history of’ or “the staggering Refinery29 success story” with useful tips on how to turn a blog into a churning million dollar business. Because face it, what Christene and her partner Piera Gelardi have achieved in the last ten years is no laughing matter. They saw a digital opportunity, grabbed it by the balls and sprinted with it to the highest echelons. They had guts, those girls, and still do. Have you seen their new offices?? They must have like a hundred thousands people working there, all these witty, funny, hip, straight-out-college brainiacs who, in a few simple, spruce paragraphs, will have you hooked on edible chokers or a new underground Korean sea weed restaurant if that’s the latest fad. It’s a fun, cool place where you can wallow in reflected glory.
Anyways, let’s get back to the book. To my great surprise, they asked me to be in it, photo shoot and all. “Wear some vintage, and layers,” they said. “Something you!” They put me in hair and make-up, took me to the streets, as they did dozens of other astonished girls – sorry guys, it’s just about females! – interviewed me and presented the entire package on page 44 and 45 in a book about STYLE. That’s right: no history, just pure, inspiring street style. The book has tips on ways to wear denim, how to mix prints, what to do with metallics and step-by-step demonstrations of one piece, worn three ways. It’s like a training manual for aspiring style mavens or as Piera says in the introduction: “I hope people walk away feeling inspired to take a risk with their style. Fashion can be so fun and confidence-boosting when you get past this perception of exclusivity or judgement.”
So there you have it. I am honored to be part of this book. We are mutual fans and now it’s forever branded.
