What happened to Knitwear?

One would expect London to be the epicenter of great knitwear. Scottish wool is pretty much spun on its doorstep and it’s the kind of hyperbolic climate that requires natural fibre insulation year round. But I was disappointed when I reviewed all the shows and presentations. I had this idea to do a “Best Knits of London Fashion Week’ post but I didn’t come up with much. Most impressive were Joseph, Peter Pilotto and Issa. Their cozy, chunky, cool sweaters, scarves, skirts and dresses gave me euphoric jolts of excitement. But the rest of the London crop left me kind of cold, pun intended. Even my favorite man, J.W. Anderson didn’t show any knits on the runway this season. So it begs the question: is quality knitwear harder to produce? Are we sick of big sweaters? What’s the hesitation? Or am looking in the wrong place?

In my search for the ultimate knit I did discover one amazing young designer: Jamie Wei Huang. A painter and a sculptor, this 29-year old Taiwanese prodigy studied at Central Saint Martin’s, was mentored by Stella McCartney and has been awarded too many prizes to list. I love the durable simplicity of her clothes. And the two knits!

I guess we’ll have to see what Milan and Paris have to offer!
