Go West, Young Woman

According to the official website, the Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited structure in North America. History shows that native Indians lived here up to one thousand years ago, long before Columbus discovered America and Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. These days, most members live in conventional homes outside the village though, and occupy their Pueblo houses mainly for ceremonials. Tradition dictates that no running water or electricity are allowed within its walls – heck, how else would they watch their plasma TVs and toast their bread?

The Pueblo was declared a Unesco Heritage site in 1992. I discovered the place quite by accident when I was researching spots to shoot the Pre-Fall editorials for DVF. To our surprise it was quite easy to get photography permits. Tourism is basically one of the main economic incentives for the Indians. They’re happy when people come visit. And what was even better, is that the Pueblo was not yet open to the public after the winter holidays. So we had the place all to ourselves!

We spent about eight hours on the premises. Which wasn’t nearly enough time to capture all its splendor nor that of the DVF collection. Nonetheless, the girls and I had a blast. I made them wear South Western cowboy boots and hats, and African beads and bird masks, all to blur the lines between the multitude of ethnic influences that was twirling around that day. More about those beautiful ladies in the next post, when I reveal the rest of the shots! But for now, please read my interview on DVF.com.
