The story goes that when Twiggy arrived in the United States in 1967 to shoot her first Vogue cover, a photographer at the New York Times ran to the airport to snap her picture, before anyone else did. The eager man in question was Swedish-born Gosta Peterson and the picture, the first one of Twiggy on American soil, is now on view at Turn Gallery until March 8th. “From the Archive” is a solo exhibition of fashion photographer Gosta Peterson’s – he’s 91 years old! – selected groundbreaking images from 1960 – 1980, including the historic New York Times “Fashion of the Times” cover featuring Naomi Sims, the first African American woman to grace the cover of an American magazine. Peterson began shooting for Mademoiselle in 1958 and continued to shoot for other publications like Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmo and Esquire.
It’s a really beautiful exhibition – please go and see it.
