It’s OK, we’re taking notes too.
Tales of Endearment blogger slash mega-stylist slash casting director slash street-style star slash just all-around cool person Natalie Joos has the kind of It factor that makes you stop and take notice. So when Kipling told us she would be styling its fall campaign, we knew it was going to be good…and that we had to be first in line to get Natalie’s best fashion tips. Read on for her words of wardrobe wisdom, and of course, feel free to use the amazing campaign shots above as inspiration for your back-to-school wardrobe—we know we will.
Did you have a favorite look from the Kipling campaign?
“I love the milkmaid look with the long checkered skirt. It’s a chic kind of granola.”
What are five things every girl should have in her closet this fall?
“Equestrian boots, an oversized wool coat, cropped jeans or cigarette pants, cashmere, and a pair of cool black masculine sunglasses.”
Do you choose an outfit first and then pick out a bag or vice versa?
“I start with the outfit, and at the end I add the bag. Sometimes it matches…other times it totally clashes.”
Are you a shoulder bag or backpack kind of person?
“Backpack!”
If you had to choose one fall outfit to wear all season, what would it be?
“Loafers, cropped jeans, a comfy long-sleeve T-shirt, a cardigan, and a loose blazer.”
What do you think will be the biggest trend for fall?
“For me, fashion is not about trends—it’s about individuality, about being unique and creative and showing your personality. That’s the reason I’m so into vintage. You don’t have to run after any trends to be fashionable. It’s about confidence, and that never goes out of style!”
Do you have any memorable back-to-school outfits from when you were a teen?
“It’s funny, but I have no recollection of any back-to-school moments. I suppose they weren’t very eventful or traumatizing. I went to an all-girls high school where we had to wear gray uniforms, so that has a lot to do with it. The big coup came when we were finally allowed to wear black jeans—it was such a major event! I tried to be as creative as possible by wearing my dad’s sweaters and having my mom sew me stuff. I’d come up with an idea, and then we’d find a pattern and tweak it.”
Isn’t Natalie the coolest?
