5, Rue du Mail

Street style photographer Candice Lake has been taking care of Rue du Mail‘s social media stuff for the past three years – bet you didn’t know that! – so when I asked her to shoot my Look of the Week in Paris, she suggested we use some looks from the new collection, because “It’s so you! And so fun!”. I used to wear a ton of Martine Sitbon. How long ago was that? Late 90s? Anyways, it was such a cool brand then. Low key, structured, comfortable, wearable, a bit rock and a bit dark romantic, and above all super French. It’s taken me some time to rediscover Martine and her come-back label Rue du Mail, but I’m back on the wagon. With her past two collections she’s speaking my language again!

And I wanted to say something about my hair. Because I’ve been getting questions about it, especially from girls who have curly hair themselves. First of all: it’s very hard to control this hair. It leads a life of its own. God and genetics decide. I am completely powerless. It changes with the weather, the water, the shampoo, the conditioner, my brush, my (e)motions. It’s never the same so I can’t give much advice! I cut it at Ion Studio in New York and do my color with Lena Ott (who’s starting her own salon very soon. She came up with this new blonde mane!) Just one thing I have discovered is that sweating (from running for example / don’t be disgusted) and then using dry shampoo and brushing it out, produce this kind of frizzy fuzziness I like. It gives me just that little bit of confidence that somewhere God is cutting me some slack. Try it!

All garments and shoes by Rue du Mail (SS13); vintage Minnie Mouse sweatshirt; Black and red “Madame” bag by Delvaux; Pink chain mail necklace by Amelie O; ‘Anouk’ sunglasses by Tom Ford. Hair by God & Lena.
